Twenty-five young designers were honored in a retrospective celebrating the fifth anniversary of Bernhardt Design’s innovative interdisciplinary studio with Art Center College of Design. The studio was initiated to give students a “real life, real time” experience from the initial client brief through the launch of a product in the market. Since its inception, the design-thru-production concept has served as a model for other similar educational programs.

The Bernhardt Design partnership with Art Center College of Design was based on the school’s strong relationship with industry as well as their reputation for being a leading institution for over 80 years. Hosted within the environmental design major, the course has successfully trained students to design products that are visually stunning, appropriate for manufacturing, fiscally feasible, and suitable within the constraints of mass production.

The students have been challenged to create world class products in a number of different categories including: multipurpose training tables, bar stools, stacking chairs and collaborative lounge furniture. The calibre of their creations has been affirmed by a long list of design awards.
Their collective effort has been recognized with Best of Show award at Neocon and the Best Designers at ICFF. Individually they have been the recipients of the Best of the Year Award by Interior Design, the Good Design Award and The Red Dot Award, as well as extensive global media coverage.
Former students have embarked on successful careers from designing for major design practices to starting their own creative studios and working with top-tier manufacturers worldwide. The work of twenty designers from the program are currently in production with Bernhardt Design. This was a class reunion everyone wanted to attend.
